Revival Tune-Ups No. 19 : Chris Layton / Double Trouble

The next Revival Tune-Ups comes from a true Austin original and dear friend of the shop, Chris “Whipper” Layton. A legend in the music world, Chris first got bitten by the rock and roll bug at a young age after hearing Chubby Checker’s “The Twist.” Shortly after, Chris picked up his first drum kit at 13, met Stevie Ray Vaughn 10 years later, and the rest is history.

Of course, that is oversimplifying how influential this multiple Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee has been to the world of Blues and Rock and Roll. Beyond being the cornerstone of Double Trouble backing Vaughn, incidentally, the first unsigned band ever to play the Montreaux Jazz Fest, Chris has been the foundation of “supergroups” Arc Angles, Storyville, and Grady. And don’t think for a minute that after all these achievements, he’s hung up his sticks. Chris has been laying down the backbeat for another blues guitar virtuoso, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, for the last 20 years and tours with the Experience Hendrix All-Star band.

It’s cold outside, so put a big pot of Texas Red on the stove and hit the link in our bio to get into this sweet mix of Blues, Soul, and R&B from our buddy. Give him a follow on Instagram @whiptale.
